A hectic week that has seen our first defeat in the league and a managerial resignation. Ian Mañasco was making his debut as manager against fellow early pace setters Europa Point FC. Europa were the only team to have taken points from United in the league following a 1-1 draw back in October. Much has changed since then. A drop of form saw them 8 points adrift of the first position but they have found form recently and have been involved in some matches with very scandalous scorelines! That said Ian put out his first 11 as manager. Lee Muscat and Dylan Mañasco were back after serving two match bans, the latter replacing a banned Aziz Aitlachen. Evan Coleing, after making some very impressive showings from the bench and in Cup Games, got his first start for the club relegating the ever reliable Aden Victor to the bench. Elsewhere, its as we where as United sought to bounce back from last week’s controversial loss.

Ian Mañasco’s first team as manager.

It was a very tight opening to the match. Both defences wary of the opposition’s hitmen. Muscat was back and Europa Point have, in Robert Montovio a player with plenty of Premier League experience. United were dominating the early stages of possession and Muscat in particular looked hungry and eager for the ball. Indeed it was a product of this possession that granted United with the first chance of the game but Mark Casciaro could not get a clean enough contact of the ball that sliced wide of the mark. Long range efforts were a trademark of the first half with both teams trying from range but not finding the target. Europa Point were clearly playing the containing game content to break up United’s attacks and then strike on the counter. The most controversial moment of the half came roughly on 30 minutes when the Europa Point manager was sent to the stands by ref Glenn Gilbert after former’s relentless hackling of lines man Andy Parody.

The lack of goal mouth action was solved in an instant by two classy shows of power and skill. Lee Muscat took matters into his own hands and collected the ball just past the half way line. Cue a Muski trademark run. He certainly resembles a charging tank when he gets the ball and rumbles forward. The defenders were visibly nervous as Lee is not only blessed with sublime skill but also immense strength. As defenders threw themselves at him, he attracted them like moths to a flame, he cleverly put through Mark Casciaro who had cleverly followed the run in. Mark then also showed off his skill by shuffling the ball past the last defender and the keeper leaving himself with a tap in. 1-0 with 3 minutes to go to half time, a perfect time to get a goal.

1-0. Mark Casciaro

1-0. Mark Casciaro

Half time saw the introduction of Europa striker Hulk, he of ‘camilla’ fame of the first game. Despite his imposing frame he certainly plays a fair game and enjoys the physical challenge. Europa threw more caution to the wind as they knew they needed a goal. But the play tended to stagnate in the center of the field as passes pinged across all over the park. Europa Point had their first chance but Garcia blasted wide. It was to be Hulk however that nabbed their equaliser in a defensive mix up that allowed the Spanish striker to score his goal unmolested on the 53rd minute. It was game on and an improvement of the first half as both teams went at it full throttle knowing that this match was an important one between direct rivals. Europa player Angelrei then stupidly got himself sent off in 5 reckless minutes when he got booked twice.

United pressed hard trying to make their extra man count but credit to Europa Point in holding steadfastly. A tiring Coleing gave way to Aden Victor and he was soon to have a gilt edged chance when Andrew Lopez fed him a ball on the edge of the D. He powered in a well directed, low shot that went straight at the keeper. A inch either way and the story of the match could’ve been different. Said keeper also pulled off a tremendous save, diving sharply to his left from a Muscat shot. A move made moot by an offside flag. United couldn’t find a way through and Europa always a threat on the counter, indeed a lucky ricochet even spun off the post with Chino beaten.  The ref’s whistle brought the match to an end with a share of the spoils. United go top courtesy of goal difference with Angels still to play. Still with a game in hand and the match versus Angels FC next week, the league is still in our hands.

Randal Aldorino Steps Down

It was with great sadness and reluctance that President Paul Collado accepted the resignation of manager Randal Aldorino this afternoon. Randal cited personal reasons for his stepping down and in no way was his decision based on the outcome of the Scorpions match. He was frank and honest in his reasons and the club reluctantly accepted. He leaves as a friend and supporter of the Club.

Randal has worked tirelessly since the relaunch of Gibraltar United in the summer and is the main architect of our current league position. He guided the club through its initial matches and went unbeaten for 13 games in the league. He worked very hard with his players and coaches and he leaves with the gratitude and respect of all.

He attended today’s training session at Europa Point and was met with a standing ovation from players, officials and coaches. He said some words of inspiration and stated his desire to remain linked to the club with which he has developed a deep affinity in his time with us. Paul presented Randal with a fine bottle of his favourite tipple and expressed his thanks on behalf of all as well as ensuring Randal he would have some role in the future, whenever he was ready to return. Kevin Eagle also decided to step down as Assistant Manager.

The manager’s mantle now passes onto Ian Mañasco who will be assisted by Joe Falero and Stephan Langtry. Randal, indeed, was vociferous in his support for Ian and his staff and urged the players to give that final push to land the 2nd Divsion title and promotion. Randal many thanks for all your efforts and we will see you in the Red and White once again soon

It has taken 14 matches and 6 months but we fell to our first league defeat today in a lackluster and dour match in which the referee and the opposition play acting took center stage. With Muscat and Mañasco still suspended Andrew Lopez led the line up front on his own with Casciaro, Aitlachen and Rumbo supporting him from midfield. Jared Buhagiar slotted back into the left back berth after his injury lay off and Lee Buhagiar returned at center back after resting for the Mons game. Joe Borg was a late replacement as Chino was carrying an injury that he aggravated in the warm up. Coming out with one striker in such a pivotal game seemed to suggested a draw would have been a satisfactory result for the manager.

Borg in for the injured Chino

Borg in for the injured Chino

The game started poorly as both sides jostled for position and showed each other some respect. That said it was Scorpions who had the first chance, but in Joe Borg we have a solid keeper with safe hands and easily dealt with tame shots from distance. Lee Buhagiar, an immense rock at the back, had a tremendous game from the off. His positioning was excellent, his head a magnet to all balls floated in. Vocal in encouragement to his team mates he showed excellent leadership qualities on the field.

20 mins in and the referee starts to take a hand in affairs. A ruckus on the far touchline saw a number of players wade in with the usual handbags. Warwick brandished a yellow in the direction of Scorpions Number 7 Gomez and play resumed. Nothing extraordinary in that, but it was a second event involving Gomez that would prove to be decisive. Chances were few and far between as both teams battled it out in midfield. Eager to create something Mark Casciaro deftly turned the aforementioned Gomez. With the Scorpions player beaten he callously pulled on Mark’s shirt to bring him down. A clear yellow if there ever was one. Why the referee bottled it and did not send the player off is beyond everyone’s comprehension. He certainly did not show any hesitation to brandish a second yellow in Aziz’s face late in the second half though. Interesting.

2015-02-19 20.10.10

As the teams emerged for the second half it was more of the same dour affair. In all honesty Scorpions had the fair share of possession but lacked any killer bite. United’s resolute pair of centre halves saw to that! Former College Europa player to Tostao however blew the clearest chance of the game wide when put clear on goal.

The decisive moment came on the 80th minute. A good through ball to the wing followed by a decent cross found the ball at the feet of Gomez, he of the nonexistent second yellow card, who looked a meter offside. Using his pace he left Aaron behind to rifle the ball past Joe Borg. Despite protestations, rather raucous ones from the crowd, the goal stood. Things went from bad to worse as 2 minutes later Aziz was shown as second yellow as he showed his frustration at blatant Scorpions play acting. I guess footballing cultures are different all around the world and we are more used to an English fair play culture as opposed to one where conning the ref is endemic. Pity the refs always seem to fall for it. Surprising how the second yellow didn’t hide as it did earlier with Gomez.

2015-02-19 21.23.52

With 10 men on the pitch and energy levels dropping Scorpions took the 3 points home. Coleing and Howe, a belated second striker, came on too late to have any effect on the outcome. However, with a game in hand and our direct rivals to play each other as well as United, we are still in pole position but well done to Scorpions for doing what they had to do and scrounge out a result. Minds now firmly on Europa Point and the next match.

Quarter final match on a Friday evening under the lights at the Stadium. United were forced into a number of changes due to injury, absences and suspension. Dylan Mañasco and Lee Muscat were both suspended due to bookings in our last league match. Aden Victor came in at left back and Shane Howe led the line up front. Evan Coeling made his first start and Aziz also made his full debut for the club. Kaylan Rumbo replaced the injured Mark Casciaro in center midfield while Matthew Massetti got his chance partnering Aaron at center half. Hard work in the Reserves is paying off as a number of players were called up to the match squad as the coaching staff rotated the squad.

United's XI for the game

United’s XI for the game

A very open start to the match saw both teams show a willingness to get forwards quickly and often. Both Justin and Evan on the wings were excellent outlets for the balls from the middle of pitch where Aziz conducted our offensive play in a masterful manner. The first real sign of danger came from Mons when a Cortes shot was cleared off the line by Aaron Collado with Chino clearly beaten. Not long after that the United crossbar was left rattling from a Mons header courtesy of a very well delivered and executed corner routine.

Yet, as it has often been the case this season Untied perform best in adversity. Half way through the first half a clever Aitlachen ball saw Andrew Lopez breakthrough the resolute Mons defence. A burst of speed left him with only keeper Carling to beat and this he did with a neat finish. Mons protested very loudly claiming a clear offside position. Unfortunately for them the match officials did not agree and the goal stood. Mons immediately took the gauntlet and defender Escavia came close just before the ref blew for half time. Though United were 1 up Mons looked the better team in the first 45.

Justin Collado ensured this would not be the case in the second. Straight after the kick off he delivered a peach of cross which was gratefully met by Andrew’s head as he nestled the ball into the net. A cross of tremendous quality that show cases Justin’s other side to his game, its not just all about speed and power. Indeed he was one of our best players in the second half. Mons heads dropped as the body blow, so soon after the restart was almost impossible to surmount. Shane Howe spurned an easy chance when one on one with the keeper and both Aziz and Evan Coleing having the freedom of the Victoria Stadium.

It was, however Kaylan Rumbo that really lit up the stadium. Some great ball control and clever play from him saw him create the necessary space to be able to line up a shot at goal. A lobbing, yet placed shot, flew over Jamie Carling’s head and bulged the back at the net. The crowd was off its feet and even opposing supporters sportingly clapped Kaylan’s stunning shot. With the match seemingly won Aldorino moved his bench with both Shane and Coleing coming off for David Gallardo and Adrian Lopez. The former instantly had a chance but missed the one on one with keeper.

Andrew, hat trick hero on the night had no such issues as he finished off Carl Thomas’s excellent dribble and cross to put the score at 4-0. United into the semis but not before Cortes bagged a consolation for Mons. With Evan Sayers completing the substitutions as he came on for Aziz United can look back on a job well done and a morale boosting result before our next match against an inform Gib Scorpions in the league next Thursday. The semi final itself will be against another of our direct rivals in the league, Angels FC

SUBSTITUTES

Stefan Cumbo on for Mark Casciaro

A bitterly cold easterly wind literally froze the huddled spectators that had gathered for the 18:15 kick off at the Stadium. Though the temperature felt sub-zero the match was anything but. United presented a somewhat atypical line up with Dylan Mañasco asked to put in a shift at left back due to injury to Jared Buhagiar. Mark Casciaro made his full debut after already playing as a sub and in the reserves. Kaylan Rumbo kept his midfield berth while Lee Muscat comes back into the side after fully recovering from his injury. Aziz Aitlachen, a January transfer form Premier side Lynx FC was on the subs bench.

09-02-2015 21-00-23

The game started briskly enough with United quickly moving the ball out to the flanks. Justin Collado looked hungry from the off. His trademark powerful runs constantly getting him into space behind the O13 left back. Mark Casciaro showed his class and vision in the center of the park as he dropped deep to gather the ball then finding those spaces necessary to receive the ball in good positions to develop play. The strong easterly wind also played a major role in these early stages as the ball tended to hang in the air as either team launched a long ball or goal kick. These conditions meant that there was little chance to exploit Lee Muscat’s pace in behind what looked a pretty static defence line. The breakthrough came on 28 minutes when Carl Thomas weaseled his way through the right wing and rifled in a low shot. With Lee Muscat hovering around the penalty spot. Muñoz in the O13 goal inexplicably handled the ball into his own net. A peculiar OG if ever there was one! That’s when the match exploded.

As Lee run into the net to pick up the ball, conscious of the fact that our direct rivals were netting hatful after hatful of goals he wanted the game to resume quickly, something was said as he charged the O13 keeper. Heads met and both players shoved each other. As team mates of both began to congregate in waded referee Stewart Bonavia to brandish a red card in Lee Muscat’s direction. As supporters in the stand were expecting the same punishment to be dished out to Muñoz the surprise was total when Bonavia decided that the Olympique goalie only merited a yellow. The first in a myriad of perplexing decisions! The ref did not have a good game by any stretch of the imagination.

Half time followed with little goal action as United scrambled to readjust to playing with 10 on the field. As the whistle went to end the first half players gathered around the referee and there seemed to be some shoving with the opposing team as well. Temperatures on the field were much higher than in the atmosphere and fireworks were expected in the second half as O13 would no doubt come out all guns blazing to capitalise on their one man advantage.

United proved to be more resilient than anything Olympique could do however. The numerical disadvantage seemed to have focused United as the boys in red and white played their best 45 minutes of football since the Christmas break. Casciaro moved the ball around exquisitely while in Lee Buhagiar, Gib Utd have a solid rock hard defender that takes no prisoners. Justin Collado provided a useful outlet as his speed and trickery kept the 11 men of O13 on the back foot. Andrew Lopez led the pressing from the front line and the inexhaustible Carl Thomas chased after every ball and made every tackle. Rumbo and Victor supported Mark while Aaron remained as sure as always to center the defence and marshal the rear line.

United's 10 men press O13 in the second half

United’s 10 men press O13 in the second half

Aziz Aitlachen made his debut with 55 minutes gone on the clock and he immediately brought more poise and control to our midfield. His style of play is elegant but simple making things easy but effective. With the introduction of Evan Coleing a few minutes later it was clear that we had more class on the field than our opponents. The fact that Chino had no saves to make and the chances were piling up against Muñoz meant the writing was on the wall. 60 minutes in Lee Buhagiar thundered in a half volley to get his first goal for the club. In all honesty it was what United deserved as our 10 men were clearly better that their 11.

New impetus and energy flowed through our ranks. Evan Coleing in particular looked sharp and lively. He had a very good opportunity to score, forcing Muñoz into a save and fed in some clever balls to team mates in space. Indeed it was in one clever break thorough in which he sped in between the two opposing center halves that he was fouled inside the area as he was about to shoot. Clear penno and even the ref couldn’t get this one wrong. Up stepped Mark Casciaro to put away the spot kick with aplomb. His first goal for the club and a just reward for a selfless performance. The tiring goal scorer was replaced by Stefan Cumbo. Stefan could have earned himself a brace especially following one dazzling run from deep when he left the whole of the 013 team in his wake. His finishing unfortunately was not of the same standard as the run and his tame shot was gratefully gathered by the keeper. Justin Collado however had no issues with his finishing as he totally blasted in United’s fourth goal after leaving the left back for dead for the umpteenth time in the game. Olympique bagged a consolation goal with the score at 3-0 when Lee Graham capitalised on a mistake by Chino.

Mark Casciaro scores from the spot!

Mark Casciaro scores from the spot!

3 valuable points that take us back to the top, Angels FC having gone top yesterday. We still have one game in hand but our next 3 league fixtures will be crucial in determining the destination of the title. Scorpions, Europa Point and Angels in that order. Before that however we have the no small matter of the 1/4 Finals of the Second Division League Cup versus Mons Calpe FC on Friday at 8pm. Hope to see supporters in the stands cheering the lads on!

It wasn’t to be. Despite the appeals to the magic of the cup and a surprise lead, Lincoln FC showed why they are perennial champions and why they deserved to fly Gibraltar’s flag for the first time ever in the Champions League. Gib Utd’s management staff had a decision to make as regards this match. With 4 key league fixtures coming up in the month of February would we rest players or play a strong side. The latter option was chosen with a team full of league regulars. A brave option but also a reward for these players to test their mettle against Gibraltar’s finest. The only change from the previous line up was Kaylan Rumbo coming in for Stefan Cumbo who drops to the bench. Former Lincoln players Lee Muscat and Mark Casciaro were unavailable through injury and suspension respectively.

Starting XI vs Lincoln FC

Starting XI vs Lincoln FC

It all started so brightly. We rattled Lincoln with several hard tackles and our lines held firm and tight. For a brief moment we retained possession and the quick play so characteristic of our style reared its head. The ball moved swiftly through midfield, out the wing and then cut inside to find Aiden Victor who smashes in a sweet ball past the Spaniard Navas in the Lincoln goal. Cue pandemonium among the large number of United supporters in the stands (thanks guys and gals for the turn out) and stunned silence from the Lincoln end. Was an upset on the cards?

2015-02-02 21.34.24

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. The goal awoke the sleeping giant and Lincoln showed their class. Walker and Mejias began to dictate play in the center of the pitch and were gradually asserting their dominance. Chino made a terrific point blank save 15 minutes in (Lincoln’s first real attempt) and soon followed it up with a double save that even Manuel Neur would have been proud off. 25 minutes in referee Barcelo decided to take a hand in affairs and gave what seemed an unjust foul outside our area. The resulting shot is parried by Chino only to have Ryan Casciaro tap in from the rebound. 2 minutes later Lee Casciaro puts his brother Kyle through on goal and he didn’t miss on the one on one. The avalanche continued but Chino proved the better of a thunderous Liam Walker shot, acrobatically parrying the ball out of play.

Once again Chino was the better of another Lincoln forward as he deflected John Paul Duarte’s toe poke wide. The Lincoln team sheet read almost as a Gibraltar Team sheet but for the time being we weathered the storm. To Lincoln’s speed we responded with heart, courage and 110% effort showing the supporters watching that we deserved a place in the Premier Division next season. All 11 Gib Utd players on the pitch were at full throttle and despite the lack of possession, something we are normally not used to, still held our heads above water. By half time however both JP Duarte and Lee Casciaro had also got their names on the score sheet.

The 2nd half kicks off

The 2nd half kicks off

The 2nd half kicked off with former Red Imps player Evan Coleing replacing Shane Howe. 1 minute into it Chino Goldwin was once again called into action as he tipped Liam Walker’s 20 yard effort over the bar. From the resulting corner Liam Walker unleashed the sweetest volley that will be seen in the stadium this year. Chino, beaten, could only see ball rattled the crossbar. He hit the ball with such force that the bar is still rattling!  Lincoln would score another two goals to make the score a final 6-1. Yet Gib Utd’s supporters never lost their voice and neither did their players dip their efforts on the pitch. Indeed we came very close to nabbing a second goal when Kaylan Rumbo drifted a header narrowly wide.

Our players can be proud to have stood up to players who have played in the Champions League this season and have shared a pitch with the World Champions. They were plenty of international caps on show but we look to our own and applaud their guts, efforts and determination to keep going to the final whistle. We are now fired up for Olympique 13 next Monday in the league as we return to our real battle, the one for promotion! Well done lads we learn and move on!
