Farinha makes his expected return to the line up and Elghobashy has recovered from several niggles to take his place up front. Leo also makes a start with Negrette dropping to the bench as Manolo seeks to contain Lincoln’s initial push and play on the counter. Great news as well in seeing Marco back in the team, albeit on the bench, after a bout of illness.

The brief was to equal or better St Jospeh’s result and boy did we better it. Parallels can be drawn to a few weeks ago when we beat Europa for St Jospeh’s to then beat Lincoln the following day. Well following St Joseph’s defeat on Thursday to Europa we face Lincoln Red Imps today.

United started brightly and aggressively and 60 seconds into the match Mr Barcelo had his first massive call to make when Elghobashy showed Roy Chipolina a clean set of heels, burst into the area and was felled; clear penalty from where we were sat but Mr Barcelo emphatically waved Red and White appeals away as the game continued. Was he setting the tone? The fact that Chipolina could not keep up with Ayman was made abundantly clear however.

United had an excellent first 15 minutes with the defence handling Lincoln’s attacks with ease. Farinha and Aguiar neutralised Lincoln’s tried and tested diagonal ball to the wings and provided the basis for our forward momentum. Forward momentum that got its just rewards 9 minutes into the match. Leo floated in a delicious ball that fell inbetween Chipolina and Oli and land at Dani’s feet just as he ghosted past them. His calm touch and subsequent composure allowed him to deftly poke the ball past a helpless Soler to give United a lead that not many in the stadium expected, though the hardcore United support did! He wheeled off in celebration in front of the Lincoln support as he was engulfed by team mates.

Ecstasy that was doubled a mere 120 seconds later as Elghobashy once again left Chipolina and the rest of the Lincoln defence in his wake. He won the byline, powered past the defence and as Soler came out to close the already tight angle he simply rolled the ball under the keeper’s body to score his 9th goal of the campaign and shock the Lincoln support into silence. United 2-0 up and the game 10 minutes old…not what Lincoln’s script had expected.

United ceded some possession then but each and everyone of the eleven men on the field of play went on to have a flawless first 45 minutes. Farinha was simply spectacular and around him the 10 other heroes battled. Carlos, Leo and Jamie made the middle of the park their own while Baio and Dani sacrificed some of their game to graft and toil on the wings. Ayman as always harrassing at the spearhead of our attack. Lincoln began to get frustrated and thier only clear chance was a Falu half volley parried by Chino. The other moments of danger came from crosses and corners. Supporters did not want the half to end such was the ease with which we were controlling the game. As Mr Barcelo blew his whistle a certain needle had worked itself into the game, needle that would overspill in the second half.

Lincoln started the second half with a double substitution that signaled their intent. Joseph Chipolina made his comeback from injury and Merino came on and Lincoln went on to the attack from the whistle. Wave after wave of white attack surged forward but the defence held firm. Mouelhi was being solid in the air and Barnett was throwing himslef into every block and challenge.

Lincoln began to create chances though. First it was a tame shot that Chino handled well, then a ball crashing against the post that kept our goal safe. Then it was Farinha with the first of a couple of goal line clearances. Hearts were palpitating and breaths being held but we were keeping the juggernaut out! Elghobashy was a constant threat though and every ball over the top meant a chase for Oli and Chipolina that frankly they didnt fancy. All that pressure however did have its fruit when Merio pulled one back on 66 minutes to give the game an extra edge moving into the last 25 minutes.

25 minutes of great friction if I may borrow Clausewitz’s phrase. There were some lengthy spells of stoppage due to United players being hurt. Lincoln players, keeper Lolo Soler in particular were taking great umbrage at this and tempers finally broiled over when Baio went over hurting his wrist. Soler was quick to remonstrate, again, and claim play acting. An action that incensed the United bench especially as Baio could not continue. As tempers flared Sanchez Alfaro was sent to the stands and Soler booked for what may be interpreted as unsporting behaviour. Lincoln assistant Coach, Segovia, was also sent to the stands by Mr Barcelo as frustrations began to get the better of people.

Yet try as they might Lincoln could not get through. Carrasco sent another ball off the line  as Lincoln desperately sought the equaliser. Alas for them it did not come and hope soon evaporated late in the game as United sealed the three points. Elghobashy won his sprint against the defence for the umpteenth time and with Soler to beat he crashed a curled shot against the crossbar, United supporters could not believe it…yet there to pick up the pieces was Aguiar who had tapped his energy reserves to follow Ayman in. He picked up the rebound, shuffled his feet and neatly put the ball away to seal the points.

Watching the match was almost as exhausting as playing in it but what a massive three points! It now opens a 5 point gap with St Joseph’s in 4th and it largely negates the advantage of their game in hand. 3 more massive games to go with the next one against Glacis United on Friday evening at 20:30.

United welcome back Baio and Aguiar back into the XI following bans for accumulations an red cards. They come in for Bosio and Pereyra. The former suspeneded and the latter on the bench where he is joined by Mouelhi as Brad Power returns to the line up for this most testing of matches against the rampant Red Imps.

A wet and windy 90 minutes of football that were dominated by Lincoln’s first 15 minutes and a frnankly brilliant Lolo Soler in the second half. United came out of the blocks cold and had no response to the Imps’ blistering start with Chipolina and Bernardo Lopes running the show. United just couldn’t keep hold of the ball and get their rhythm going.

The deadlock was broken from a corner that was not a corner and from a ball controlled via a player’s hand. Mr Borg judged that a ball going out of play last came off Farinha, which it didn’t. The resulting corner came in and Oliver rose higher than anyone else to claim it. The ball hit his chest and nestled briefly on his arms, this last action allowed him the second he needed to settle himself and rifle the ball past Chino. A clear handball that was unseen by the refereeing team, who did have a very good game in very harsh conditions in all honesty.

Lincoln’s second 10 minutes later had the touch of the fortunate as a shot from distance from Bardon took a wicked deflection and flummoxed the diving Chino giving him no chance. A third goal two minutes later was gifted by our defence as they all stood still from a corner as the loose ball fell in the area. Bernardo Lopes reacted the quickest to give Lincoln a deserved lead but perhaps by too large a margain.

Not that United were taking it lying down either. The retunring Baio and Meireles had shots saved by Soler and we were fighting hard in the swirling wind and rain to get a goal and back in the game. As Mr Borg called time fans wondered what was in store in the second 45.

The figure of Lolo Soler loomed liked a colossus over the second half. From the off it was clear that United were the better team. Whether Lincoln had paid the physical bill of the first 30 minutes of pressure or had taken their foot off the gas with the three goal advantage, United had the measure of the green. Elghobashy had one shot go wide, while Soler made the first of several crucial saves from Dani. Minutes later he produced a dramatic double save from the same players. The keeper was standing tall and we couldn’t find a way past him.

The best opportunity came 20 minutes in as Mr Borg judged a foul on Baio as being inside the area. Penalty! Up stepped Dani who already has two spot kicks to his name and against him was Gibraltar’s penalty expert. Soler’s spot kick record in frankly impressive having stopped 8 of the 10 spot kicks he has faced so far. Dani stepped up and the inevitable happened…

There would be no deserved award for the team’s efforts. Prescott came on for his debut and would show glimpses of his talent. Pipo and De Torres also came on and with United tilted forwards to the attack Lee Casciaro was able to net Lincoln’s fourth with a well taken finish following a counter.

Beaten but not bowed and broken, Gibraltar United’s attention now turns to the Rock Cup Quarter Finals on Sunday against some old friends in the ranks of FC Olympique 13.

Lincoln pretty much carried on where they left off pre winter break and the only points they have dropped all season has been in the game against Europa FC. That said they have been taken to the wire a number of times this season. Shrewd transfer business in January has strengthened the main unit and the Imps are still running away at the top of the league.

United come into the game following a 3-1 victory versus Mons Calpe. Though Jamie Bosio is missing due to an accumulation of yellow cards, both Baio and Aguiar are back following suspensions. United are playing well and in good form with kick off scheduled for Wednesday at 20:30 it promises to be an interesting match up

Manolo gives recent signing from AS Roma, Mattia Rosato his debut in detriment to Alberto who drops to the bench. Otherwise it’s as we were with the manager retaining faith in the unit that has won three games on the bounce. Roman, full of confidence after his brace last week, leads the line with a compact and solid unit behind him.

United supporters debut their flag

A very peculiar sight greeted the gathered supporters at the Victoria Stadium this evening as the teams walked out. United as the Home team were resplendant in their Red and White striped kits, Lincoln as the Away team sported their Home colours of Red and Black stripes. The question being asked around the stands was if the referee had actually seen the kits before kick off as the potential for a kit clash and the confusion arising out of it was immense. This shot taken in the second half highlights the issue.

836cfb68-c6d0-4e1d-9369-79126433a5ba.jpg

Lincoln kicked off the highly anticipated match and for the first 30 minutes United looked the more threatening of the two teams. Roman had Soler in action early on and Negrette blazed a long range shot wide after some fancy footwork afforded him space to shoot. Rosato, making his debut, was impressing with his pace and power but was soon in the book after a clash with Jean Carlos Garcia that left the latter with a bloodied nose. The game was close and intense with Lincoln enjoying spells of possession but creating little.

Their first chance fell to Bardon who fired from close in but could not beat Chino who pounced on the shot and kept the score at 0-0. Their second attempt came from a Calderon free kick that was once again saved by Chino. As the half crept to a close however, United rode their luck. A Falu header was brilliantly saved onto the crossbar by the United Captain, hit the line and was met by the cat like Chino that reacted faster than anyone to the action to safely gather the ball up. Mr Canepa shortly blew for half time and brought an exciting 45 minutes to a close. Both teams were evenly matched up with perhaps Lincoln being the most clinical but coming up against an inform Chino in goal.

United kicked the second half off and the match continued to stay at even pegging with both teams enjoying spells with the ball but not finding a way through. United’s attacking players were lacking the penetration to feed Roman while Lincoln’s forays were largely long balls looking for Falu. It was clear that this was a game of fine margins and the tension was palpable. Tension that was fed by a refereeing performance that agitated a lot of the match going public.

Chino was finally beaten by a Falu Aranda shot in the 65th minute. The keeper was able to parry a powerful Cabrera shot from distance but the force behind it made it ricochet off Chino’s gloves. Falu was quickest to react and struck the ball past the keeper and into United’s net. Manolo reacted instantly and threw on Elghobashy and Ramalho, both scorers in the week with the Reserves. The former’s strength and power was an instant handful for the Lincoln defence that soon had 3 men in and around Ayman. Pipo’s close ball control and class are a wonder to behold but the Red Imp’s line held firm. As time ebbed away De Torres was given his debut replacing an exhausted Farinha to add further attacking impetus as United sought an equaliser.

Mr Canepa started to brandish yellow cards as is if they were sweets on Halloween as 5 players went into the book in the last 10 minutes of the game as tensions rose and the clock wound down to full time. Aguiar blasted United’s final clear chance over the bar as the referee brought the match to an end after 5 minutes of added time at the end.

This team’s spirit is strong and determined!

Though the match and the points had been lost United players and staff can be proud that they went toe to toe against Lincoln for most of the match. This was evident in the tightness of the scoreline and the tension evident on the pitch. A first defeat of the season in any competition and a very honourable loss too. It leaves United still in second place awaiting the outcome of the St Joseph’s vs Europa match being played on Saturday. Our next game is on Saturday 18th November when we square off against Glacis United.

Lincoln Red Imps FC were founded 1976 and they are the most lauded club in Gibraltar’s recent football history, They recorded a run of 14 consecutive titles, which was brought to an end by Europa FC last season. They were also Gibraltar’s first representatives in the UEFA Champions League and recorded perhaps Gibraltar’s most famous Club scalp when they defeated Celtic 1-0 at the Victoria.

Lincoln have started the season in fine form with 5 out of 5. They regained the Pepe Reyes Cup and defeated Europa FC 3-1 in a recent league feature. United are yet to record a single point in 7 encounters with the Imps but United’s form this season has been excellent and make this fixture a top two clash and promises to be an exciting match for spectators. Chino had this to say about the game, ‘another final for us on Friday and another big test for everyone. We all know that Lincoln have a good squad but we come into this game in good form and we are training hard to prepare ourselves for another battle!’ While vice-captain Bosio added, ‘we take it the same as we have done with all the others so far. Obviously it’s going to be built as a big game as it’s first against second but we go into it as underdogs again.’

Lincoln’s might against the never-say-die attitude of United’s finely edged sword. Both teams are scoring freely and are keeping it tight at the back. Kick off is scheduled for Friday at 20:30!
