First league game in a while and played in very mild weather. Perfect footballing conditions. Time to put that disappointing penalty shoot out behind us and look towards the last 6 games in a headlong promotion rush. Gib Phoenix, it seems want to have massive say in who goes up. Having defeated us on Easter Saturday they have then beaten Scorpions and Europa Point handing the advantage back to Gibraltar United in the promotion battle. Ian Mañasco had Casciaro, Justin Collado and Aziz back from suspension after a plethora of misdemeanour’s. He was however without Dylan Mañasco who is serving a ban for another accumulation of yellow cards. Into the first XI also come Evan Coleing and veteran Damian Rocca. In a nod to the efforts in training Matthew Massetti and Carl Moreno, regulars in the Reserve side, get call ups for the match day squad. The first of 6 crucial games that will decide the destination of the title and that promotion to the Premier League!

Boca Juniors could only field 10 players and we only had one linno but the match was started by ref Mr Warwick bang on 8pm. From the off United showed their dominance. Almost immediately Justin Collado got on his bike, left the full back for dead, cut inside, shoot and have Hermida in the Boca goal gratefully gather up the shot. In Gibraltar’s next attack, an almost carbon copy of a move, Aiden Victor fed Justin who this time was able to beat Hermida placing a powerful shot beyond the reach of the keeper. Boca had not really seen the ball yet and they were kicking off again. Despite Sheriff’s best efforts in center midfield he couldn’t match the sheer class exhibited by Mark and Aziz. They kept the ball ticking and were spreading it wide where both Evan and Justin where clever and incisive in their play. Indeed both wide players had chances in quick succession.

Wily old fox Damian Rocca put in a Teddy Sheringhamesque performance. He may not have the legs of old but the footballing brain was there. He moved well with Andrew up front making himself available to our centre mid pairing. He linked up well with Evan on the left and was constantly on the move. Indeed he had a powerful shot saved by Hermida after some clever footwork just inside the Boca box. Yet his most telling contribution was in assisting Lee Buhagiar’s most spectacular of goals. Rocca crossed the ball from one end of the box to the other to be met by a Buhagiar already in the air and positioning his body to whack the ball into the net via an aerial scissor kick. Roy of the Rovers stuff from the hard as nails center half. 2-0 and cruising. United fans in the stands were expecting the floodgates to open.

It was all United from here on end. Boca had no shots on goal and keeper Joe Borg’s only touches of the ball were intercepting a couple of high and wide crossed balls. Yet United seemed to have left their shooting boots at home. Andrew Lopez missed a series of good chances while shots from Coleing and Aziz went high and wide. No matter how hard Boca tried they couldn’t get into the match. yet fair play to them. They turned up with 10 men to fulfil the fixture and despite chasing shadows for 90 minutes they did not resort to hard tackles or foul play. Indeed the game was played in good spirits and no cards were shown to either team.

As the second half progressed Rocca appeared to have been fouled in the area but Mr Warwick did not agree and waved away relentless appeals by the United number 8! Soon after both him and Mark were subbed and made way for Carl Moreno and ‘Paco’ Thomas. Carl brought more composure to our midfield and Paco run the line in a quick and effective manner getting in behind Budhrani on numerous occasions. He made Hermida work once and put in a number of telling balls, none of which were finished off when they should. As the floodlights came on Boca knew their ordeal would soon be over but at least their goal had not been perforated again.

With no more outfield players left, Mañasco was forced to use ‘Chino’ Goldwin as an outfield player as Evan Coleing signalled he needed to come off after feeling something go in his leg. With his usual good cheer and boundless enthusiasm Chino took to the field and immediately went up front for the corner with supporters yelling at him to remember not to use his hands. To be fair to him he moved well, crossed in a few good balls and missed an absolute sitter! Keepers eh! The pressure kept on piling on but despite Lee Buhagiar hitting the crossbar with a pile driver there were to be no more goals. Shout out however to Matthew Massetti who kept his composure and concentration to clear a very late, and only attempt on goal, Boca attempt off the line. 3 points. One step forward and 5 to go. Over to our pursuers now.

United’s first match since the Easter Saturday debacle against Gib Phoenix and we couldn’t have had a tougher nut to crack against league pursuers Angels FC. Both Mark Casciaro and Justin Collado were missing from the squad due to suspensions and that meant that Ian had to reshuffle the pack. Evan Coleing dropped to the bench and in came Adrian Lopez at right back and Shane Howe to partner Lee Muscat up front. Andrew Lopez shifted slightly to the left while ‘Paco’ Thomas played in a slightly more advanced role than normal on the right wing of midfield. United was looking to bounce back after a frankly disappointing and uncharacteristic performance last time out. The prize, a berth in the final of the 2nd Division League Cup Final where Europa Point FC awaited the winner of this much awaited tie.

The game started briskly amid a very strong easterly wind that was a determining factor favouring the team kicking North to South. United had the first chance of the game and what a chance it was!  Andrew Lopez floated in a measured cross that was headed on to the centre of the area. Jared Buhagiar, a mere few yards out stuck out a foot and blazed the ball over the bar. A great start for United but that was pretty much it for the first half. Both teams were somewhat wary in the prevailing conditions and played cagely from the back. Aziz and Dylan were locked in a titantic battle in midfield with the Angels pair and referee Patrick Canepa, who had an excellent game, had to clam nerves on several occasions.

Possession was more or less equally shared as the game degenerated into a quagmire in midfield. Neither team was able to gain a significant advantage despite good wing play from United. Both teams also played well in defence with Adrian Lopez and Lee Buhagiar rocks for United, while the Angels centre halves marshalled both Muscat and Howe. As Canepa blew the half time whistle the crowd was hoping the temperature on the pitch would rise in the second half.

Despite a slow start, there were more chances in the second half in particular for United. With Dylan ascendant, his best game for a while, Thomas and Lopez on the wings, supported by Aziz down the middle began to find space where there was none in the first half. First Andrew and then Lee Muscat had chances to score. Andrew drove a forced shot wide after using his pace to leave Angels player Chozas in his wake and Muski was croweded out by a frantically retreating Angels defence. Yet the best chance fell to Aziz Aitlachen that curled a peach of a shot just shy of the top left had corner of the goal after having beaten keeper Mateo Perez. Angels themselves carried little danger forward in the initial 90 minutes and it was not until the second half of extra time that they enjoyed their first real chance.

Extra time saw a better flow to the match with both teams having chances. United used substitute Gallardo’s height and pace to good effect. Aden Victor, another sub, spurned a good chance but it was Andrew that proved to be the most profligate. Put through but Lee Muscat, he snapped at a shot that he drew horribly wide. Perhaps fatigue was setting in and tired minds did not realise he had time and space to compose himself and pick his spot. Angels’ only real chance in the game came in the second half of extra time. A shot, thrown around by the wind, wrong footed Chino who was more than relieved to see the ball bounce around the post and out to touch. In the dying embers of the game Angels had a goal ruled out by offside but Canepa had already annulled the play as he had blown for a foul. The resulting free kick was the last action of the game before the penalty shoot out. United were to lose the shoot out 5-4

Stefan Cumbo on for Kaylan Rumbo

A much moved fixture, originally this game should have been played in late January, was played on Easter Saturday which meant United was left with a very short squad with players unavailable through a myriad of reasons. Ian Mañasco made a number of changes as a result. Kaylan Rumbo covered at Left Back for Jared Buhagiar who moved into the centre of defence. Evan Coleing started on the left of midfield while Justin Collado played off main striker Andrew Lopez. It was a bad day at the office that saw United lose and, to compound the misery, saw it’s players ill discipline see two red cards. This result leaves the fight for the title wide open and it will in all likelihood go down to the wire. In the words of the great Sir Alex Ferguson, ‘squeaky bum time!’ Your usual reporter was not at the match so no detailed report today. Enjoy your Easter break readers and United will be back on the pitch for the 2nd Division League Cup Semi Final vs Angels FC next Sunday at 18:30.
