Formed in 1966 in the wake of England’s World Cup triumph the Orange and Blues have been a staple name in local football since. A well established and supported club Lions also boast an impressive youth setup. Though United merged with them in 2011 both clubs now compete as independent entities and enjoy a healthy rivalry on the pitch. In recent times Lions have enjoyed the benefits of investment but also suffered from the loss of that investment due to financial issues completely out of the club’s control.
United vs Lions matches tend to be hard fought and feisty affairs. Last season saw three draws that saw the sides share the spoils, though United just pipped them to finish 7th, one spot above Lions on goal difference. Indeed both club’s flirted with relegation at various points last year. The 17/18 season, however, has seen a total reversal of fortunes for the better for both. Last season’s basement battle has now turned into a 2nd versus 3rd match up this coming Saturday that will no doubt excite the football going public. Both sides know that 3 points will consolidate the 2nd position on the table.
