Manolo Nuñez was literally down to the bare bones for this match versus perennial champions Lincoln. Carl Thomas and Robert Montovio were banned for accumulation of yellow cards while Kaylan Rumbo was missing after seeing red versus Europa last time out. Summer signing Steffan Cardona, however, made his debut after coming out of an injury while Sean Mascarenhas was gifted a rare start. A plethora of injuries meant that it was a very lean squad available. He deployed his assets in a 5-4-1 formation conscious of the fact that Lincoln would be out to put United to the sword.
Lincoln were very quick off the blocks. GFA international, Joseph Chipolina, scored a belter of the goal from about 25 meters out just 2 minutes into the game. It set the mood and seemed to unsettle Chino who made an uncharacteristic error in Lincoln’ second by palming Liam Walker’s effort into the goal arounf the 15 minute mark. The game was truly over by half time, United having let in 5 goals. Byron Espinosa had been lost to injury, El Andalussi replacing him. A much better second half performance saw only an extra goal chalked by the champions.
The January transfer window beckons and reinforcements are sure to come in. Also on the horizon are two season defining games against Glacis United.
A very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all our friends and supporters!
